Rattlesnake Avoidance Clinic for Dogs Photos

Held May 16 and 17, 2015 Sponsored by CNMBC

Dispite the March-like weather, nearly all of those registgered for Terry Chandler's clinic make the drive out to the West Mesa outside of Rio Ranch. Rotating two Western Diamondback rattlesnakes, Hector and Herbie. The weather the next day in Eldorado, near Santa Fe, was much more plesant..At both locations, the owner/handlers walked their dogs into the wind to catch the scent of the snake, see the snake, hear the snake, and feel or come very close to the snake. When proximity was reached, the e-collar was activated by Terry. It was then make clear to each dog that the snake was the source of its discomfort. When each of the three groups had their face-to-face time with Hector and Herbie, it was time to take a walk in the desert in a new location sans e-collar. Different location, same rattlesnakes. Nary a dog approached the rattlesnake.

The photos, in order, are of the seven groups, the dog's learning about avoiding rattlesnakes - all rattlesnakes. The retests of new and former camine students, to a dog, show them wanting no part of the rattler. Some dogs came with six-to-ten feet, while others caught a scent and/or hear the rattles and stopped in short order turning in the opposite direction.

Thank you Terry and Janet Chandler for your experise and sensitivity to the dogs and owners alike. Thanks to Dave Snyder and Bill Bradford for placing and removing the e-collar from all the dogs.
